Trips

Agaete ... A different look

Agaete is a municipality in the northwest of the island of Gran Canaria, a former pre-Hispanic settlement of great relevance as evidenced by the large number of archaeological finds that exist in this area. Its Puerto de Las Nieves was the place from where the Castilians conquered the island of Gran Canaria in the 16th century. Today, Agaete has three different spaces to visit: the town, the valley and the port of Las Nieves, all three represented on the proposed route.

We will visit:

* The Hermitage of Our Lady of Las Nieves, (16th century). Fernández de Lugo, conqueror of the island, always carried an image of the Virgen de las Nieves, which gave its name to the small port of Agaete.

* The Church of La Concepción. This monumental church dates from 1874, date on which it was built to replace the primitive building that was destroyed because of a devastating fire. It stands out for its elements made of red stonework that contrasts with the white of its facade, its large dimensions and for its eclectic character. Inside it houses a Flemish triptych attributed to Joos Van Cleve of great artistic value.

* The Museum of La Rama, where the history of one of the main popular festivals of the entire Canary Islands is shown. Festivals linked to traditions inherited from the pre-Hispanic settlers, such as the most popular in the Canary Islands, the Fiesta de la Rama, in which the ancient settlers claimed water from their gods in times of drought; all descended from their settlements on the summits, with tree branches, in a dizzying religious dance, heading to the seashore.

* The Huerto de Las Flores, a small botanical garden that houses more than one hundred different species from the five continents. Its roots date back to s. XIX. Its creators, members of a prominent family of Agaete, returned from their trips around the world with cuttings and tree seeds.

* The Town Hall and the Cultural Center of the Villa, two examples of houses of the Canary bourgeoisie of the nineteenth century, with typical island flavor and examples of traditional Canarian architecture. In both cases they retain some elements of remarkable architectural interest, such as the inner courtyard around which the different units are distributed, following the style of traditional Canarian architecture.

* The Archaeological Site of Maipés, former pre-Hispanic cemetery. One of the most important in Gran Canaria, which attests to the importance of Agaete as a pre-Hispanic settlement

* A coffee plantation and cellar. Visit that runs under the shade of orange, mango, guava, avocados ..., enjoying the beautiful views of the Agaete Valley, and where we will also taste the typical products of the area.

Visit to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Learn the history of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria through the neighborhoods of Vegueta and Triana.

The Vegueta neighborhood, a beautiful colonial-style corner, declared a National Artistic Historic Site in 1973, is the founding nucleus of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the first location of the Castilians in the Atlantic, and the place where the Crown of Castile I start the Conquest of the Canary Islands. This neighborhood of colonial houses is the heart of the city. Its streets concentrate history, architecture of historical value, temples and numerous charming squares. Walking through the streets of Vegueta means doing an exercise in history through some of the most intense chapters of the capital of the Island since its foundation in 1478.

The district of Triana was the place where the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria began its expansion. In contrast to the Vegueta neighborhood, which with its narrow streets and its atmosphere full of history transport us to the Middle Ages, the Triana neighborhood is more bourgeois, because many merchant families settled here. That is why it is explained that the main street that crosses the entire district has such a colossal display of architectural styles from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The origin of its name is due to the fact that many of the Spaniards who participated in the conquest of the Island came from Andalusia. Today, we can enjoy a pleasant walk along Calle Mayor de Triana, which in addition to being one of the most important commercial areas of the capital, brings together several buildings of great historical and artistic value.
